JOB DESCRIPTION: SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAPROFESSIONAL

 

REPORTS TO: Supervising Teacher

                     Director and/or Other OCEC Administrators

 

EMPLOYMENT TERMS: Salary and Term of Employment as determined by Board

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Graduate

60 Semester Hours College Credit (Exceptions must be approved by Board)

OR pass the ETS ParaPro Assessment

 

DUTIES: As Listed Below

           

 

 

Essential Responsibilities:

 

  1. Assist a small group of students or an individual student in a particular task planned and assigned by teacher or other professional worker.
  1. Accompany and/or assist mainstreamed student in regular classroom and in other        integrated/mainstreamed settings.

 

Marginal Responsibilities:

 

            Prepares instructional materials, correct student work, records grades, etc. at the

            direction of the teacher.

 

RISK MANAGEMENT:

 

Essential Responsibilities:

 

  1. Assist with implementation of student’s behavior management program; if necessary, intervene and/or physically contain a student, under the direction of the supervising teacher or administrator, in situations as necessary.
  1. Lifting and positioning of students and equipment as required: Frequent lifts of 25-50 pounds and occasional lifts of 51-75 pounds occur from floor to waist level.  Body control of students during transfers occurs up to 150 pounds, and up to 200 pounds with assistance. 
  1. Supervise and monitor students to insure appropriate behaviors and help to curtail  inappropriate behaviors.

 

Marginal Responsibilities:

 

  1. Assist with playground/free-time supervision and monitor free-time areas and rest periods as directed.
  1. Take students to lunchroom and monitor students at lunch.
  1. Inform supervising teacher of any problems encountered when interacting with students.  Reports to the teacher and/or administrator on any development or problems that come to the aide’s attention and that may require an awareness of or action by the supervising staff.
  1. Assist in the set-up, operation of, and maintenance of equipment, e.g. physical therapy, communication devices, audio-visual, computers, etc.
  1. Participate in scheduled inservices and staff development activities when directed.
  1. Assist in maintaining an orderly and neat classroom environment. Monitor the classroom and other areas accessed by students to insure no dangers exist, e.g. glass on playground, broken desk, loose carpet, etc.
  1. Supervise students when in time-out areas.         

 

SELF-CARE:

 

Essential Responsibilities:

 

            Supervise and/or assist students with self-care activities, e.g. toileting, washing face and hands, clothing care, etc.

 

Marginal Responsibilities:

 

            Assist students with feeding, food preparation, etc. as needed.

 

TRANSPORTATION:

 

Essential Responsibilities:

 

            Assist with student transportation, e.g. helping students on and off school buses,     then getting the students to their respective classrooms.

 

Marginal Responsibilities:

 

            Transport and/or drive students as needed during the school day.

 

MISCELLANEOUS:

 

Marginal Responsibilities:

  1. Perform duties such as recording information, record keeping and filing data as required by the teacher.
  1. Establish close and supportive relationships with students.
  1. Maintain the confidentiality of all information regarding any student.
  1. Perform all other tasks as directed by the supervising teacher and/or administrator.

 

Additional Responsibilities/Demands:

  1. Occasionally, services may be performed in hallways or areas where dust or debris may

        sometimes be present.

  1. Occasionally, odors may emanate from cleaning supplies or bathrooms.
  1. Detail work is frequently performed that required reading small print and figures.
  1. There is occasional use of the telephone system for internal and external communications.
  1. The job requires tolerance of stress, at times for sustained periods.
  1. Work time is spent intermittently walking, standing, bending, reaching, pushing,

        pulling or stooping to move, position, access and treat students.
