Job Summary
The Chana Education Center Physical Education (PE) Teacher will provide students with a foundation in health and physical education that focuses on whole body well-being, strength and conditioning, and sportsmanship through individual, dual, and team sports. The PE Teacher will design and implement physical education programs for students with social and emotional and functional needs, existing concurrently with high intensity behavioral support needs. The PE teacher works as a member of the program’s educational team.
Essential Job Functions
- Measure student progress in relation to the district/state/national standards.
- Design, plan, and implement physical education and health lessons based on school/district/state/national standards.
- Create appealing lessons that implement a variety of methodologies that teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness; health education; individual, dual, and team sports; sportsmanship; and other PE topics.
- Ensure that the physical education environment is clean, safe, and constructive for all students.
- Cultivate student awareness and ownership of personal performance and physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being.
- Celebrate individual and collective accomplishments by teaching the importance of personal growth and self-improvement.
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required by OCEC policy and ISBE law and administrative regulations.
- Order materials and equipment to implement instruction in the educational setting.
- Guide students in maintaining acceptable standards of classroom behavior.
- Work closely with special education staff (Teacher, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech and Language, Nursing, etc) to support students’ individual PE needs to support the students participation in the PE and Health classroom.
- Develop and utilize scheduling and time management techniques to implement PE for a variety of student populations in K-12th grade.
- Consults regularly with program staff and local PE teachers, as requested, regarding implementation of PE instructional activities.
- Assists classroom staff to manage student behavior, as necessary, by utilizing intervention techniques designed by the teacher and/or program staff, following guidelines for use of the least intrusive intervention and best practices consistent with students’ needs and disabilities.
- Ensure accommodations and modifications are made for the growth and development of all students.
- Develop systems to record, monitor, and interpret student progress.
- Locate additional resources and facilities necessary to support positive student connections with community activities (e.g. local parks, swimming, weight lifting, bowling, roller skating, etc.).
- Encourage teamwork and emphasize sportsmanship to set collective and personal development goals.
- Uphold and enforce school rules, district policies, and administrative regulations.

Required Qualifications
- Illinois Professional Educator License in Physical Education
- Trained in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (or willingness to complete training in)
- Demonstrates an understanding and use of equitable and culturally responsive practices
